The Platinum Rule - Do Unto Others as they want Done unto Them!

There are many “personality-based” training programs, assessments and workshops… and for good reason. Most are quite good, and learning about the strengths and weaknesses of our “style” is usually time well invested.

When I became familiar with Dr. Tony Alessandra’s Platinum Rule® teachings, I discovered unique features that would benefit both my clients and me as an Encouragement Coach.

I chose to teach The Platinum Rule® for several key reasons:

1. It brings a “connecting with others” element to the session as it is based on a more modern and interpersonally sensitive teaching called “The Platinum Rule®”. The Golden Rule states that we should “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” When it comes to morals, ethics and honesty, there’s no finer rule! However, when it comes to interpersonal communication and interactions, if followed to the letter of the law, it can often backfire. The Platinum Rule® is, “Do unto others as they would have you do unto them,” or, “Treat others as they want to be treated!” Not everyone behaves as we do, and adapting to their pace and priorities is a surefire method for reducing interpersonal tension and increasing levels of trust.

2. The Platinum Rule® is more “prescriptive” than “descriptive”. While most other training programs focus on having the participants learn about their own “style”, ours focuses on reading the style of others and adapting to each different style for the purpose of improving every interaction. Our customized reports do teach you about your style, but more than 50% of the report offers prescriptions for improvements; increasing levels of adaptability, improving productivity, increasing sales effectiveness, becoming a more charismatic leader, etc…

3. Our online assessments feature a 360º component which creates a graph clearly displaying the differences between how a person thinks he/she behaves compared to how others perceive their behavior. Many participants find it enlightening to discover that they don’t always come across in a manner that they believe they do (depending on the other person or each situation).

4. The biggest reason for choosing The Platinum Rule®? It is fun, memorable and can be learned in just a couple of hours. Dr. Alessandra has taken a complex psychological concept (behavioral adaptability) and distilled it down to making two simple decisions about another person’s behavior: Their degree of “openness” and their degree of “directness”. Putting these two decisions together makes it easy to determine if the other person is in a Directing mode, Socializing mode, Thinking mode or Relating mode.

You will be delighted when you see your coworkers immediately gain the ability to “read” each others’ primary behavioral styles (within the first hour of our workshop). Then, they learn how to make small adaptations in their own behaviors to eliminate tension with people of different styles; thus increasing the effectiveness of every interaction!
